MFL Intent
At Giles Brook, we believe learning another language is an important part of being a member of a multi-cultural society as it provides children with an opening to other cultures and allows them to see, value and learn about other societies. In our school, French is the key language taught. We recognise however, that children at Giles Brook speak a range of languages which we value within our classrooms, through assemblies and in our interactions with our pupils - we celebrate our diverse community.
Our language provision fosters children's curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. We encourage children to express their ideas and show their understanding through verbal and written responses. Practical storytelling, games and rhymes support learning in a fun way and teaching provides an awareness of the culture, its language, literature, music and art. Children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2. Vocabulary is key to our teaching programme and this is embedded throughout our provision. Some of the areas covered include numbers, colours, pets, in the town, food and drink, the classroom, clothes, sports and hobbies. We see language teaching in our school as the foundation for learning further languages and hope that we inspire our children to go forward with their studies through secondary education and beyond and become fluent communicators in at least one additional language. |
